Fire Stopping involves containing fire or smoke within rated assemblies by using tested fire-rated systems. There are four main types of openings or joints in fire and smoke resistive rated assemblies where fire stopping systems are applied to prevent the spread of fire, smoke, or gases:
Joints between fire-rated construction components, such as wall-to-wall, wall-to-floor, and wall-to-ceiling connections.
Floor Perimeters, including slab edges and exterior wall cavities.
Penetrations, which are openings containing Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, Security, Communication, Piping, or Wiring elements.
Electrical Outlet Box Protection, where Fire-Rated Putty Pads are applied to electrical boxes as required by the code, especially for electrical boxes with combined openings exceeding 100 square inches per 100 square feet of wall or located on opposite sides of a wall within the same stud cavity and separated by a horizontal distance of less than 24 inches.
